Oilseed radish is a popular cover crop known for its ability to mobilize nutrients, and cereal grains (oats, rye) are known for their ability to retain nutrients. Would mixing them help to time the release of nutrients in a way that benefits a subsequent crop, compared to radish planted alone? In this publication, Purdue and Wisconsin researchers report modest effects on plant-available phosphorus, except for localized “hot-spots” that could provide opportunities for precision planting, and recommend that nutrient retention strategies should rely on multiple conservation practices.
