Using a twitch, especially on the upper lip, to restrain a horse is common. However, relatively little scientific evidence exists on whether it has a calming effect or is aversive to horses. In this publication, researchers from Purdue University and Texas provide perspective on the practice and recommend what handlers should know to safeguard the horse's well-being.
